Two new rescues!

Great news -- Cookie is being adopted, or at the very least fostered at a potential owner's home. Good luck, Cookie! You were a blast to have around.

We now have two new rescues: Slinky, an approximately 1 year old Chihuahua mix.

Slinky is good with cats and kids, and plays with dogs of all sizes. He's sweet and loves to cuddle. He's neutered and up to date on all his shots, and we're working with him to teach him some basics. He's adorable, isn't he? :)

Our next rescue arrived today: Hank, an approximately two year old Pit/Boxer mix.

Here is the description we received from his foster mom:

Meet Hank.... he is a selfless, carefree pit-boxer (we think) mix. He has been living with us since Sunday, 9/12. When we first found him, he was emaciated, hungry and wouldn't come near humans. We now interact and play with him on a daily basis. While interacting with other dogs, Hank is curious, but gentle. He is anxious to play and would love to be able to play with another dog his size. He has never made an aggressive move, or barked at any of the dogs he's been around. He has been patient and playful with all he has encountered. Hank is gentle and sweet natured to us as well. He is anxious for us to come home in the afternoon, and is waiting to play when we get to the door. He just wants to be loved, and is ready for the love and affection that a great home could give him. He needs a big yard with room to move around and someone who is willing to walk him and play daily. We think he's still a puppy, based on his very clean teeth and his playful nature. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or would like to see him.

Hank has recently been neutered and is up to date on all his shots. If you would like to meet either Slinky or Hank, please come down to the store (2924 Lake East Drive, 89117) during business hours or give us a call and we can arrange a meeting.

This is our new rescue, Spooky. We did have another, Spike, but Stacie adopted him right away! Spooky is a 20 month old Dachshund. He's full of energy and affection but can become overly possesive over food and toys. He's on a diet to lose a couple pounds, and we're working on training him for simple commands. Wow, can you believe it? We are going to be seven years old tomorrow, April 1st. In 2003, Elissa and Reuben Burda opened up Doggie Oasis Day Care in The Lakes area. Long gone are the early days when Doggie Oasis was one room and one dog, the Burda's dog Emma. In the last seven years, the business has grown both in number of clients and actual space! We are proud now to have a fantastic group of regulars and a steady flow of boarders, out-of-towners, occasional friends who visit for a day or two of play, and rescues. We love each and every dog that comes through our business and we are so grateful and honored you let us care for your doggie family members.

As the Burdas' business has grown, so too has their family. Recently, they sold the business to Ron and Barb Petty. Ron and Barb has kept the staff and the practices that have made Doggie Oasis such a special place, and we all look forward to a smooth transition.

One of the things that we know everyone looks forward to every year is our Birthday Package, which we are pleased to offer again this year! You get six months of our 12-day package for $1500, which is a savings of $300! This offer is available only in April. Ask a staff member about it the next time you're in!

Of course, it's not a birthday without cake, right? Come in Thursday, April 1st and Friday, April 2nd, and your pup will enjoy some cake from Three Dog Bakery. Pictures, decorations, and silly hats will be involved. :)

Meet our new rescue: Red

Red is a Vizsla/Weimaraner mix. His family is moving and can't take him with them. :(

He is a really sweet 2 1/2 year old. When he first got here he was quite shy around the other dogs, but it took less than a day for him to be comfortable enough around them to fall asleep in the corner! As you can see, he's a beautiful auburn color -- very unique.

Red would work best in a home without cats. He is looking for a loving home where he can stay forever.

If you'd like to meet him, come on in! His adoption fee will be $150, and we expect him to be adopted fast. =)

New Rescue

We've gotten a new rescue! His name is Dash. He's a one year old Dachshund-Beagle mix. He's super high energy, outgoing and loves to play. He is staying with us and we are giving him basic training so that he'll be ready for a forever home. He's gone home with Rebekah and did well with her cats. If you are interested in adopting Dash, please come into the store at 2924 Lake East Drive to meet him!

Last night's Superbowl was a great game! I'm really glad that the parity in the NFL these days makes for good Superbowls. It wasn't too many years ago that the Superbowl was a guaranteed blowout; but these days it's actually worth watching for more than the commercials! It really reflects in the ratings. Over 106 million people watched the Superbowl this year, breaking last year's record of nearly 99 million viewers. People are noticing and tuning in!

There were a lot of other firsts in this game. Last night was the first time an onside kick was attempted in any quarter other than the fourth, with the Saints regaining possession to start the 2nd half with a successful short kick. Last night also marked the first time Google aired a television ad. And of course, last night was the first Superbowl championship in New Orleans Saints history. It's been a tough few years for the city of New Orleans, so I'm happy they got this win.

Many of the victims of Hurricane Katrina included pets and other animals. Here is a link to Louisiana's Humane Society, who has worked tirelessly on behalf of the animals in New Orleans. On it you'll notice a scoreboard. The New Orleans Humane Society and the Indianapolis Humane Society challenged each other to see who could raise the most amount of money in honor of the championship game. =)

Well! Both Peyton Mannings must be happy about the results of yesterday's Colts/Vikes game. One being the quarterback for Indianapolis and the other being the much cuter doggie version:

He picked Indy to win, obviously, and is our drawing winner this week! He will win a $25 gift certificate good for any Doggie Oasis service.

The Vikings/Saints game was a very exciting game -- tied at the end of the fourth quarter with 19 seconds left and Brett Favre makes a terrible decision to throw, resulting in a pick instead of a five yard gain he could have run for to give his team a chance to kick a field goal to win. Instead, the game goes into overtime and the Saints pull out a victory with a 40 yard field goal.

Some of my favorite times are late in the day when most of the dogs have gone home and there are just the boarders and the late pick-ups. Since there are fewer dogs, it gives us a chance to bond with the dogs that are left without it being so crazy. The dogs are (mostly) tired, and we can just sit and snuggle or play a light game of ball without thirty dogs chasing it! :)

This week in NFL news, Indy beat Baltimore, Minnesota crushed Dallas, NY Jets squeaked a win past San Diego, and the Saints roared back from late season losses to beat the Cardinals with an impressive 45-14 score.

And in DOW (Doggie Oasis Woofball) news, Foreclosed Upon Pets beat last week's rescue group, the Bassett rescue, by $3!

The AFC/NFC Championship Round is this week! The Jets play at Indianapolis while the Vikings take on the Saints in New Orleans. The winners get to go to the Superbowl, which is played in Miami this year. Should be a great game, whoever gets in!

This week's rescue group is Animal Adoptions Ltd.:

Wow, Baltimore, way to go! You handed New England their first home playoff loss since 1978!

The match started off with a stellar first quarter for the Ravens. They scored 24 unanswered points, many of those off New England turnovers. The Patriots managed to score a touchdown each in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, but any hope of a comeback was over when with about ten and a half minutes left in the 4th quarter, they failed to score off their drive and the Ravens took five long minutes off the clock in their subsequent possession. Final score: 33-14 Baltimore Ravens.

Foreclosed Upon Pets Inc:

Foreclosed Upon Pets, Inc. (FUPI) is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to the rescue of domesticated animals that have been abused and/or abandoned by their owners as a result of economic hardship, including home foreclosure, loss of employment, insufficient income, or death and illness. FUPI will work to further the cause of animal control through the education of the general public about the humane benefits of spay and neuter programs. FUPI will take on a leadership role in developing strategies and creating coalitions with other animal rescue organizations in order to better serve the residential and commercial sectors of the community in the fight against animal cruelty.

Webster’s definition of foreclosure: To shut out.
FUPI will make its services known to individual owners of pets who are suffering from the following:

Economic hardship due to loss of job/home
Insufficient income
Temporary housing for hospitalized pet owners
Temporary housing of military pets
Death of a pet owner

Some pets come from loving families that have no choice but to relinquish their animals to animal control authorities due to home foreclosure.
Some rescued pets come from owners who have passed away or due to severe illness can no longer care for their pet.
Other animal’s come from less responsible pet owners who have neglected, abused and/or abandoned their pets. Upon rescue, many of these animals are in need of medical attention, appropriate food, and socialization with people and other animals.
FUPI’s approach to animal rescue will be a proactive alternative to animal cruelty and abandonment.

The holidays are over and here we are in a new year (and some would say, a new decade). Hope everyone had a fun and safe holiday season!

The year 2009 is very nearly over! It's been a big year here at Doggie Oasis. We've met a lot of great new dogs, adored the ones we knew, and were sad when a few moved or passed away. That is life in the doggie business. We appreciate so much your trust in caring for your canine kids. We fall in love with each and every one of them in some way or another. Thank you!

To howl in the new year, Yasmine and Lindsay are hosting the NYE party. Nearly every one is here already, and we're hoping they won't tire themselves out too much before midnight!
